Rendering in Widemouth Bay
Widemouth Bay properties take a serious battering from Atlantic weather — the render system has to be up to it.
Widemouth Bay sits about 4 miles south of Bude on one of North Cornwall's most exposed stretches of coastline. The properties here — a mix of older cottages, holiday lets, and modern builds — face some of the harshest weather conditions in the region. Atlantic storms hit this stretch directly, and the salt content in the air is high enough to accelerate the degradation of any exterior coating.
For Widemouth Bay properties, there's really only one render system we'd seriously recommend: silicone. The hydrophobic surface repels salt-laden water rather than absorbing it, the flexible formula handles the structural movement that comes with coastal exposure, and the self-cleaning properties mean the render stays looking clean longer even in a location that gets this much weather.
We see a lot of failed render on Widemouth Bay properties. The most common pattern: someone used a cheaper system, it cracked within a few years as the property moved and as salt crystallised within the render layer, water got behind it, and now there's damp inside as well as failed render outside. The repair job ends up costing more than a quality system would have in the first place.
Holiday lets and second homes make up a significant proportion of the properties here, and the owners usually want a low-maintenance finish that looks good and doesn't need repainting. Silicone render in a good through-colour ticks all of those boxes — properly applied, it should look good for 20+ years without any intervention beyond an occasional soft-wash to remove algae.
We're based in Bude and work in Widemouth Bay regularly — it's a short drive and we know this coastline well. If you have a property here that needs rendering or has render that's starting to fail, get in touch and we'll come and take a look.
Working dates here is also a real consideration. The cliff-top properties around Black Rock and along the coast road simply can't be rendered in proper Atlantic gales — the wind drives the basecoat off the wall and dries the topcoat unevenly. We plan Widemouth jobs around the forecast, not the calendar, and we'd rather start a week late than rush a job that won't last.
