Monocouche Rendering
Through-coloured render that goes on in one coat and never needs painting.
Monocouche Renderingin North Cornwall & Devon
A single thick coat of through-coloured, cement-based render, scraped back to an even pitted texture. No painting, ever.
Monocouche is a through-coloured, cement-based render that goes straight onto blockwork or prepared masonry. The colour is mixed all the way through — no painting, ever. If it gets chipped, the same colour shows underneath. It goes on in two passes, then gets scraped back with a nail float at exactly the right point as it cures. That timing is everything — get it wrong and it drags or tears. Get it right and the wall looks consistent from corner to corner for 25 years. The scraped texture is the usual finish, but it can also be left as a coarser roughcast or a smoother texture to suit the property. For most houses in North Cornwall on sound blockwork or solid brick, monocouche is the right call for a clean, modern, low-maintenance finish. It stays breathable too, so moisture vapour escapes from the wall instead of being trapped behind the render.
How we do it
01. Prep the wall
Checking suction and sorting any defects before anything goes on.
02. First pass
Laying on the first thickness and bedding in alkali-resistant mesh.
03. Second pass
Building up to the full depth with through-coloured render.
04. Scrape it back
Scraping the surface at exactly the right cure point for the final texture.

Frequently asked questions
Q.How long does monocouche last?
A.Applied properly over a sound wall, 25 years and more.
Q.What's the difference between monocouche and silicone?
A.Monocouche is a thicker, rigid cement render with a scraped finish. Silicone is thinner, flexible, and water-repellent. On exposed coastal walls, silicone is usually the better choice.
Q.Does monocouche crack?
A.It can hairline-crack where there's movement, because it's rigid. Mesh gets bedded into stress points to minimise this.
Q.Can it be sprayed on?
A.Yes. On larger jobs spraying is faster and more even. The final scraping is always done by hand.
