Plastering & Rendering in Great Torrington

Great Torrington's hilltop setting and historic town centre have both the challenges and the character that good rendering can enhance.

Great Torrington is a hilltop market town in the Torridge valley, roughly 30 miles north-east of Bude. It's a town with a notable amount of older stone construction — particularly in and around the historic town centre — alongside post-war housing and more recent development on the slopes running down towards the river.

The town's position on a hill above the Torridge means elevated wind exposure on the west and north faces of properties. For any exposed elevation facing the prevailing weather, a render system with good water-shedding properties makes sense. Silicone's hydrophobic surface is the natural choice on these positions — rain beads off rather than saturating the surface.

The historic core has some genuinely old stone construction — 17th and 18th century buildings in the town centre that need breathable render rather than modern polymer systems. We're careful when specifying for this type of building: the wall construction drives the choice, not the aesthetics.

A significant amount of the housing in Great Torrington is standard cavity-wall construction from the 1950s through to the present. These are conventional render jobs — well-prepared surface, silicone or monocouche system, clean finish.

Great Torrington is on the northern edge of our Devon coverage. We work here alongside jobs in Bideford, Barnstaple, and Holsworthy.
