Ilfracombe is a Victorian seaside town on the North Devon coast — high cliffs, a working harbour, and a collection of large Victorian and Edwardian villas that are among the most render-challenging properties we work on. The west-facing exposure is fierce: Atlantic storms roll straight in, carrying salt spray and driven rain that tests any render system hard.

The Victorian villas on the seafront and upper slopes of Ilfracombe are typically solid-wall construction — rendered rubble stone or brick behind their decorative facades. Many of them have accumulated layers of cement render, paint, and patch repairs over 150 years. The right approach for these buildings is invariably a breathable system: a vapour-permeable render for the solid sections, or at minimum a properly permeable silicone render that doesn't trap the moisture the wall naturally moves.

The exposure at Ilfracombe is among the highest in our coverage area. Salt spray from the harbour is persistent on south and west-facing walls. Any standard render will be attacked by the salt over time — the hydrophobic quality of silicone render is not a nice-to-have here, it's the baseline specification for anything that will last.

Away from the Victorian core, Ilfracombe has more modern housing — post-war estates and recent builds that are standard cavity-wall construction. These take conventional render systems; the exposure means we specify silicone almost uniformly for anything facing the sea or the prevailing weather.
