Plastering & Rendering in Camelford

On the edge of Bodmin Moor, Camelford has stone-built properties that need the right render system for the climate.

Camelford sits on the northern edge of Bodmin Moor, a market town with a mix of stone-built traditional properties and more modern housing. The moorland setting means different weather challenges than the coastal towns — more frost, heavy rain, persistent wind — but the underlying requirements for good render are the same: right system, proper preparation, quality materials.

The stone-built properties that make up much of Camelford's older housing stock need careful consideration when it comes to rendering. Moorland stone is often granitic — hard and relatively non-absorbent compared to the softer sandstones you see in Devon — but the wall construction in older properties still benefits from breathable render systems. Hard cement render can create problems by trapping moisture and causing freeze-thaw damage when temperatures drop.

Camelford is close enough to the north Cornwall coast that coastal weather patterns are still relevant — but the inland, elevated position means frost frequency is higher than in Bude. When we're specifying a render system for a Camelford property, we consider both the moisture exposure and the thermal cycling the render will experience through a Cornish winter.

The town has a regular pattern of renovation work — older properties being brought up to a modern standard, extensions being added to traditional houses, and the occasional new build. We handle external rendering across this area, applying the same standards regardless of the job size.

We work in Camelford as part of our North Cornwall coverage. It's on the western edge of our 25-mile radius from Bude and we cover it regularly alongside nearby work in Launceston and the wider area.

The lanes running out toward Davidstow, Slaughterbridge and the farms scattered across the lower slopes of Roughtor have a lot of granite-and-cob longhouses where the original render has been buried under decades of cement patches. These are slow, careful jobs — stripping back without losing any of the original stone face, then rebuilding with a breathable render so the wall can function again. It's the kind of work we most enjoy when there's a sympathetic owner backing the right approach.
