Plastering & Rendering in Launceston

An historic Cornish town with significant listed building stock — the right render system matters here.

Launceston sits at the eastern gateway to Cornwall, high above the Tamar Valley. It's a proper castle town with genuine historical character — there are more listed buildings per square mile here than in most North Cornwall towns, and the conservation area takes in a good proportion of the historic core.

The listed building stock in Launceston means that rendering work here needs careful thought and, in some cases, Listed Building Consent before a single coat goes on. We've worked on historic properties across the area and understand the requirements. Where a breathable render is the appropriate and consented system, that's what we use — specified to suit the wall construction and the specific requirements of the building.

The town's elevated position means it faces different weather challenges from the coastal locations further west. Bodmin Moor is close, and Launceston can experience significant frost exposure in winter that coastal properties don't get. Frost action is a factor in render failure — water gets into micro-cracks, freezes, and expands. Using flexible, crack-resistant systems and doing proper preparation significantly reduces this risk.

Away from the historic core, Launceston has a good spread of modern and post-war housing where standard silicone and monocouche systems are entirely appropriate. The town has grown steadily and there's a reasonable amount of extension and renovation work coming through, particularly on the newer residential areas.

Launceston is at the southern end of our working area — about 25 miles from Bude — but we take on work here regularly. If you've got a project that needs a renderer with the right experience for the job, particularly on complex work, we're worth a call.

The newer estates climbing up the hill toward Pennygillam and the developments out toward St Stephens are mostly modern blockwork or timber-frame construction — straightforward work for monocouche or silicone, but every plot has a slightly different aspect and the prevailing south-westerly really hammers some elevations more than others. We always quote with the worst-exposed wall in mind, not the sheltered side.
